The fact that I’m from Wisconsin should lead you assume one thing: I love cheese. And it’s true. Put a hunk of cheddar in front of me, a crumble of blue, or a wedge of brie and you can consider it gone. I’m a bit of a self-proclaimed cheese snob and my friends know that they can come to me when it comes to all things cheese. I’m definitely your gouda….errr gal.
Every year I could not be more excited to celebrate National Grilled Cheese day. A day set aside to celebrate all things gooey and delicious is my kind of day. It’s almost better than my birthday. Almost.
While I’m a fan of the classic American cheese on white bread toasted with butter, I’m also a fan of taking things up a notch when it comes to this sandwich. I love to play with the flavor profiles of different cheeses, mixing them together and pairing them with other ingredients that are sure to tantalize the taste buds.
For this sandwich I decided to start with the base of Litehouse Simply Artisan Blue Cheese Crumbles and take things from there. Since blue cheese isn’t necessarily super-melty, I decided to add mozzarella to get a sandwich with a better melt. Blue cheese pairs well with raspberries so I mashed some up to add to the sandwich. I needed a savory component so I thought that some fresh basil would do the trick. All together these flavors bring a sharp and nutty flavor, evened out by the sweet raspberries.
The sky is really the limit when it comes to constructing a gourmet grilled cheese. There really are no rules so feel free to play around with your combination. I like to use heartier bread such as sourdough that holds together multiple ingredients but you can feel free to go with classic sandwich bread if you’d like. Good luck!
