I can’t think of anything more American than a good, grilled hot dog. They remind me of hot summer nights at home on my patio or a summer evening at a baseball game. If you didn’t know, today is National Hot Dog Day and I am celebrating with these delicious Tex-Mex Hot Dogs!
Nobody really knows about the origins of the hot dog but there are a lot of varieties of sausages on buns served in Germany. Around 1870 a German immigrant began selling sausages in rolls on Coney Island. Others say that the origination of the hot dog happened at the 1904 World’s Fair. It doesn’t really matter where they originated because the hot dog has become a staple of American culture, served at ballparks and on small street carts for ages!
I grew up near Chicago so my typical hot dog consisted of mustard, tomatoes, sport peppers, onions, relish and pickles. These days I really appreciate a grilled hot dog with ketchup, mustard and relish. But in honor of National Hot Dog Day, and the fact that I’m a food blogger, I decided to step outside of the box with a hot dog so full of flavors that you’ll be asking for seconds!
My Tex-Mex hot dogs are topped with avocado, red onion, freshly grilled corn, diced tomatoes and Litehouse® Avocado Ranch Dressing. And then they are topped with bacon. Do I have your attention yet? My husband said that it was his favorite hot dog that he has had in a long time and I caught him stealing bites off mine once he finished his own. These are super easy to prepare and you can let your kids top theirs with as much or as little of the garnishes as they’d like.
